A few days ago, I was talking to Kasper Hulthin, co-founder of Podio, and he told me an interesting story about a guy he knew who wanted to hire only lucky people. This guy would take all the submitted resumes, put them into one stack, divide the stack in half, and throw out one of the new stacks (half the resumes). Presumably, the stack of resumes that was left contained lucky people. I’m not sure I agree with this guys hiring methodology, but it is definitely one legitimate way of dealing with the pain involved in the hiring process…
Luckily, some of the new technologies that are evolving are attempting to take pain out of recruiting. Podio itself is taking some of the pain out of recruiting by integrating web forms into their platform, which could be used for recruiting as follows:
No more job applications and attached CV’s to be lost in email. Set up a recruiting space in Podio, add the application form to your website, and start receiving applicants in Podio. Rate, comment and add tasks to the applicants together with your team, make a recruiting report, set up an interview, or even handle the on-boarding process. Now you can do your recruiting in one place.
This is very similar to what Jobvite already does, but A LOT cheaper and easier to use.
Another cool start-ups that are attempting to make recruiting easier is OVIA, which is aiming to replace the phone interview with a standard video-taped interview of questions and video-taped candidate answers. Likewise, Interview Street is a tool that makes it easy to evaluate a potential programmer’s code even before the phone interview stage.
These are just some of the newest tools here to solve the recruiting / hiring problem, and my guess is we will see a lot more in the coming months. Your luck with recruiting is about to change!
